PINEAPPLE

The plant is native to South America, from where it spread to Central America, and was brought over to Europe in the 15th century by Christopher Columbus. He was also the first to call it by the Spanish name “piña” (pine cone) due to its distinctive shape.

Dried pineapple is a delicious sweet snack, but it can also be chopped and used to make pastries or biscuits. It can also be used as an ice cream topping and added to yoghurt, cereals and other dishes.

The largest producers of pineapples are Costa Rica, Brazil and the Philippines.

The plant can attain a maximum height of one metre and a half, and develops only one fruit.
